Having created the brand during Covid, they are constantly trying to innovate and create high quality, long lasting and pretty fabulous (if we say so ourselves) pieces.
The word Samudra means “the gathering together of waters” in Sanskrit, the classical language of Indian and the liturgical language of Hinduism. It also forms part of the name of Samudradeva, the Hindu God of the Ocean. We aim to celebrate, educate and shed light on the meaning of the word Samudra as well as its historic and cultural origins. It seemed fitting as we create activewear made from regenerated ocean plastic and aim to help protect our oceans through donating 5% of profits to female-focused marine conservation projects such as Oceanswell organisation based in Sri Lanka.
What's your story?
The Samudra story began during the first COVID-19 lockdown, in March 2020 when living sustainably became a narrative of the utmost importance. We have all seen the documentaries on plastic pollution, fast fashion and the threat of climate change. The need to change our consumer habits has become a requirement, not just a polite request and we were inspired to help nature with our small, ethical and slow production of activewear. Katie and Margot, Co-Founders of Samudra, best friends and running/travelling/yoga pals, have always been passionate about wellbeing and sustainable living.
How do you start your day?
Coffee, podcast, dog walk followed by a (big) breakfast!
What is the brand vision for the future?
We would love to become a certified B Corporation, continuing to give back to society, support women and help protect our oceans. Another vision for the brand is to create more circular products so when customers have worn out their leggings, they could send them back to be recycled into new ones at a discounted prices. Encouraging consumers to create a demand for a more sustainable and circular fashion industry. Ultimately, we want to become a brand which creates a community, educating our consumers on how to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
What is your favourite piece from your collections?
Too hard! But we are pretty proud of the unique Pacific Top design which doubles up as a bikini top, however, we are currently working on some very exciting new designs which could easily take this top spot!
Go to exercise for a rainy day?
Cold water swimming (you’re going to get wet anyways!)
Favourite (non activewear) sustainable brand?
Tula & Tye
We say sustainable you say…?
If you were only allowed to do one thing for the rest of your life, either Yoga or HIIT, which would it be?
What piece of advice would you give to someone starting a sustainable brand?
Don’t aim for perfection (it’s too stressful and just doesn’t exist) and enjoy it!
